Carpet Cleaning in Calgary
Certified carpet technicians, hot water extraction, and one company accountable for the result.
Carpet holds everything a Calgary year puts through a door: winter salt and grit, spring mud, construction dust, pet traffic and years of compacted soil below the pile. Vacuuming lifts the surface layer. Getting the rest out takes hot water extraction at proper temperature and pressure, with enough recovery to pull the soil and the moisture back out again.
HH Contracting delivers carpet cleaning across Calgary and the surrounding communities through certified carpet technicians we vet and manage directly. You deal with HH: one quote, one schedule, one company standing behind the outcome. The technician on your floor is a carpet specialist carrying their own trade certification and insurance, not a generalist with a rented machine.
Why hot water extraction, and what the alternatives trade away
Hot water extraction, often sold as steam cleaning, is the method most carpet manufacturers name in their own maintenance requirements. Heated solution is injected into the pile under pressure and immediately recovered along with the suspended soil. Done properly, it removes soil from the base of the fibre rather than redistributing it, and it leaves the carpet damp rather than wet, typically dry in four to eight hours depending on pile and airflow.
Low-moisture and encapsulation methods have a real place, particularly in commercial settings where a floor must be back in service within the hour and is cleaned on a frequent cycle. What they trade away is depth. They work on the upper portion of the pile, so on a residential carpet that has gone two or three years between cleans, the result looks good briefly and then greys back as the deep soil wicks upward.
Bonnet cleaning, the rotary pad method still common in budget commercial work, has the same limitation and adds a risk of pile distortion on cut-pile residential carpet. We will use a low-moisture method where the situation genuinely calls for it and say why. For most homes, and for any carpet that has not been cleaned in over a year, extraction is the method that actually changes the outcome.
The single biggest variable is not the machine, it is the pre-treatment. Getting a soil-appropriate pre-spray onto the carpet and letting it dwell and agitate before extraction does more work than any amount of pressure afterwards. Operations that skip it to save fifteen minutes are the reason people conclude carpet cleaning does not work.
Upholstery cleaning
Upholstery is cleaned as part of this service rather than as a separate booking, because it is the same technician, the same visit and largely the same equipment with different tooling. Sofas, sectionals, armchairs, ottomans and dining chairs collect body oils, food residue and pet dander at a much higher concentration per square foot than carpet does, and unlike carpet you sit directly against the soiled surface.
Fabric type governs everything. Synthetics generally tolerate water-based extraction well. Natural fibres, particularly linen, viscose and some cottons, can shrink, watermark or bleed. Solvent-only fabrics must not be cleaned with water at all. Every piece gets a manufacturer tag check where a tag exists, and a colourfast test in an inconspicuous area before any product goes onto a visible panel.
Where a fabric cannot be safely wet-cleaned, we say so and leave it rather than risk the piece. That is worth stating plainly: a technician who agrees to clean anything put in front of them is a technician who will eventually ruin something expensive. Upholstery is quoted per piece by size and fabric, and bundles with a carpet booking at a lower combined rate than either service alone.
How often carpet actually needs cleaning in Calgary
Most carpet manufacturers require professional cleaning every twelve to eighteen months to keep a warranty valid, and Calgary conditions push toward the shorter end of that. Winter here means road salt and de-icing grit tracked in for five months of the year. Salt crystals are abrasive and hygroscopic, they cut fibre under foot traffic and hold moisture in the pile, so a household that skips a year does not just have dirtier carpet, it has carpet that is wearing faster.
Practical intervals: a typical household with no pets and no smokers is well served annually, ideally in spring once the salt season ends. Homes with pets, children or heavy entrance traffic generally want every six to nine months, concentrated on traffic lanes and stairs. Allergy and asthma households benefit from a shorter cycle again, since extraction removes the dust, dander and pollen that vacuuming leaves in the lower pile.
Two situations justify cleaning off-cycle. The first is after a renovation or construction work, where fine drywall dust settles deep into the pile and keeps releasing back into the air for weeks; that is a job we know well from the construction side of our business. The second is a move, where the carpet is being judged by a landlord or a buyer rather than by you, and that is scoped on our move-in and move-out cleaning page.
Certified technicians, backed by HH
Carpet cleaning is delivered by vetted specialist technicians who carry their own trade certification, liability insurance and WCB coverage. We check that paperwork before anyone is placed on a job. What's included
Hot water extraction
Truck-mount or high-recovery portable extraction at proper temperature and pressure, the method carpet manufacturers specify for deep cleaning.
Pre-treatment & agitation
Soil-specific pre-spray dwelled and agitated into the pile before extraction, which is where most of the actual cleaning happens.
Traffic lanes & stairs
Hallways, doorways and stair treads treated as the heavy-soil areas they are, rather than passed over at the same rate as a spare room.
Spot & stain work
Targeted treatment for spills, pet accidents and set-in marks. We tell you honestly beforehand what will lift and what will not.
Upholstery cleaning
Sofas, sectionals, armchairs and dining seating cleaned to fabric type, with a colourfast test before any product touches the piece.
Area rugs
Wool, synthetic and blended rugs cleaned to fibre type, in place or removed for a full wash where the rug requires it.
How it works
Inspect & quote
We identify fibre type, soil level and problem areas, then quote by room and stair count. You are told upfront what will lift and what will not.
Prepare the area
Furniture is moved where practical, the carpet is thoroughly dry vacuumed, and edges and corners are detailed.
Pre-treat & agitate
A soil-appropriate pre-spray is applied and agitated into the pile, then given time to dwell. This is where the cleaning happens.
Extract & groom
Hot water extraction lifts the suspended soil and moisture, then the pile is groomed to dry evenly and stand correctly.
Ideal for
- Annual and spring household carpet cleaning
- Pet, allergy and high-traffic homes
- Carpet after a renovation or construction dust
- Offices, clinics and commercial traffic lanes
- Sofas, sectionals and dining upholstery
What it costs
Carpet cleaning is quoted by room count, stair flights and area rugs, with upholstery priced per piece by size and fabric. Heavy soil, pet treatment and furniture moving are quoted openly rather than added on the day. Booking carpet and upholstery together prices lower than either separately.

How long does carpet take to dry?
Typically four to eight hours with normal airflow. Pile depth, soil level and humidity all affect it. We groom the pile to dry evenly, and opening windows or running fans shortens it considerably.
Will you get pet stains and odours out?
Surface stains usually lift. Odour depends on how far the contamination went, if urine has reached the underlay or subfloor, cleaning the carpet alone will not resolve it and we will tell you that before we start rather than after.
Is your carpet cleaning safe for pets and children?
Yes. Products are applied at manufacturer dilution and then extracted out rather than left in the pile. Keep pets and children off the carpet until it is dry, mainly because damp carpet re-soils easily underfoot.
Do I need to move my furniture first?
No. We move what can be moved safely as part of the job. Very heavy pieces, electronics and anything fragile we clean around, and we will point out what we are not moving during the walkthrough.
Who actually does the carpet cleaning?
A vetted specialist carpet technician carrying their own trade certification and insurance. We verify that before they are placed on a job. HH Contracting holds the contract and the accountability, so you deal with one company throughout.
Can you clean carpet after construction or renovation work?
Yes, and it is a job we know well. Fine drywall dust settles deep into carpet pile and keeps releasing into the air for weeks. Extraction removes it properly, where vacuuming alone just redistributes it.
